Underground Injection Control

What is an Underground Injection Control (UIC) system?

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality defines a UIC as "any man-made design, structure or activity which discharges below the ground or surface." It is currently estimated that up to 75% of UICs in Oregon are used for stormwater disposal and most commonly found on large parking lot surfaces.

Common UICs include:

  • » Drywells (stormwater/wastewater discharge)
  • » Cesspools (septic systems serving more than 20 people)
  • » French Drains, Soakage Trenches, Infiltration Galleries

How do the Oregon UIC regulations affect me?

Many owners/operators registered their UIC systems and did not complete a Authorization by Rule application or obtain approval for their system. Many other UIC systems were installed without applying for registration and obtaining authorization.

If you have a UIC the law requires that is be registered and rule authorized by the DEQ. Starting January 1, 2009 owners/operators of UICs will be liable for penalties and enforcement retroactive to 2001.

What steps should I take to become compliant?

You should contact an environmental professional. Environmental Works is well versed in the regulatory requirements that apply to the registration/rule authorization of underground injection control systems. We will develop a site-specific and cost effective solutions to register/rule authorize your UIC with the DEQ and eliminate costly penalties.
